UK space research in £6m boost
April 10, 2012
The government has pledged an extra £6m to four space projects that will help to further commercialise space research.
The four projects include:
- NextGen Telecommunications satellite platform (nice name for the Star Trek fans);
- a suitcase-sized satcom terminal for broadband services;
- a service for measuring land carbon stocks and fluxes; and
- preparing for the planned UK NovaSAR aperature radar mission
I don’t have much time to analyse this news, except to say that it seems also to further the government’s strategy of investing in science that brings a return. Space research, and especially that related to communications technology, is big business. Not quite blue skies research, but there you have it.
Meanwhile, over in Japan, the British and Japanese governments have signed an agreement for more collaboration on space research.
